Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) has become a resource for psychologists, incorporating human-animal interaction into a formal therapeutic process guided by professionals with specific objectives based on practical and theoretical activities. The PET Course featured a lecture titled \u201cASD and the Psychologist\u2019s Role in AAT,\u201d presented by Reatech, with the participation of psychologist Aline Prier de Saone and the Gati Team\u2014Gati Equine Therapy.<\/p>\n
Aline explains that the biggest challenge for professionals when applying AAT is people's lack of connection with animals. \u201cPeople are very used to objects and, as a result, end up objectifying animals. It is necessary to establish a bond with this animal and not just use it at the time of the session. And also to know the species, its habits and behaviors, because that is what brings safety to the care,\u201d explains Prier.<\/p>\n
In the case of animal-assisted therapy for autism, the psychologist explains that children with this condition tend to identify strongly with the yellow-footed tortoise, since it exhibits characteristics such as retreating into its shell during moments of stress.<\/p>\n
\u201cChildren with ASD experience a tremendous gain in independence and self-esteem. Contact with animals fosters an increase in autonomy and independence, motivating the patient to step out of their comfort zone and do something that was previously difficult.
