Equine-assisted therapy centers that serve the public sector need to document all their work. The warning comes from psychopedagogue and equine-assisted therapy specialist Eliana Baatsch, who spoke about public policies during her lecture at Reatech 2024. \u201cWe must be clear that free public care involves the technique of equine-assisted therapy, but also policy.\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eliana, who coordinates municipal equine therapy centers in the greater S\u00e3o Paulo area, recalled that these institutions<\/span> who work with free services in partnerships, agreements, and the provision of services on a federal, state, and municipal scale\u2014that is, in public services\u2014face difficulties due to a lack of understanding from families who want lifelong and perennial care from public assistance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere will be problems when the patient is discharged, as the family wants to continue the treatment. A problem may also arise when a contraindication for equine-assisted therapy is identified,\u201d stated Eliana. In this case, the professional suggests planning ground-based care. \u201cEquine-assisted therapy does not just mean riding a horse. It is possible to do differentiated work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Another warning from the psychoeducational specialist is when families do not accept the discontinuation of treatment and resort to the legal system. \u201cIn every equine-assisted therapy service, there are contracts, rules, evaluations, and technical re-evaluations that are essential for eligibility for care. This is also because, in order to admit the practitioner\u2014the user\u2014into the service, a health certificate is required from the physician who treats the person with a disability regarding health issues, along with technical evaluations from the multidisciplinary team to verify the indication or contraindication of equine-assisted therapy,\u201d Eliana recalls.<\/span><\/p>\n
