OrCam MyEye is the most advanced wearable technological innovation in the world and provides more autonomy to blind or low vision people

São Paulo, April 2019 – In Brazil there are more than 6.5 million people with visual impairment. According to IBGE – Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, there are 582 thousand blind and 6 million people with low vision. A little more than 3% of the Brazilian population has more restricted access to education, culture and the labor market due to these physical restrictions.

Facing this reality, the company Mais Autonomia presents at the 16th Reatech – International Fair of Technologies in Rehabilitation, Inclusion and Accessibility, held between June 13 and 16 of this year at the São Paulo Expo, Orcam MyEye, an intelligence and vision device which provides more independence to blind or low vision people.

The intuitive smart camera is the size of a pen drive, weighs only 22.5g and is attached to the frame of any glasses. The product reads the information available conveniently, easily and instantly on any printed or digital surface, from near or far, and plays audio discreetly in the user’s ear. In the recent update you can also connect another device via Bluetooth such as headset.

According to Doron Sadka, director of Mais Autonomia, the device reads books, magazines, newspapers, menus, documents, street signs, texts on cell phones, tablets and computers, product packaging, store signs and sign plates. The important thing is that reading can be done without internet access. “He reads texts and numbers off-line, which means that even in a place with no access to the Internet, he performs his function perfectly and with secrecy that, often when we are online, we do not have”, explains the executive.

Other functions that will help in the autonomy of the visually impaired are available in the device: identifying colors and shades, recognizing people and genders, faces, informing the date and time with the simple gesture of turning the wrist, cash bills (dollars, dollars and euros ) and identify products by bar code. The device is programmed in Portuguese, English and Spanish, in the female and male voices.

There are other configuration options. “You can program the speed, ranging from 100 to 300 words per minute and it is possible to register the name of up to 150 faces for personalized recognition. There is also the possibility of registering up to 200 packages for product identification. In bar code reading, there are more than 2.5 million pre-registered users, and you can register 100 more at your discretion, “adds Sadka.

The city of São Paulo has an average of one million people with disabilities, and in 2018, the city acquired devices for all 54 libraries in the municipality, which have a collection of five million titles. According to the executive of Mais Autonomia, the device is an important step and will open many doors for many people. “The world literally opens itself up to this public through access to any book, enabling it to be empowered and have, consequently, more autonomy, especially in the labor market. This is one of the most important forms of inclusion, “he concludes.
