The main challenge to promoting the inclusion and accessibility of people with disabilities in the job market is understanding which aspects limit this group. And this limitation is generally not in the disabilities they present. Cultural issues and worldview are essentially what act as barriers in society. And, as Paulo Serra, Innovation Director at Blue Ocean Events—the company responsible for curating the Reatech Congress on Inclusion and Accessibility in the Job Market—points out, “the corporate environment ends up replicating this universe.”.
According to the last census conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics – IBGE, there are more than 45 million Brazilians who have some type of difficulty seeing, hearing, getting around, or have some type of mental disability. According to the Labor Inspection Information and Statistics Panel, in Brazil there are 768,723 reserved positions for PWDs – Persons with Disabilities. Of this total, 712,829 are working in private companies, 35,551 in mixed-economy companies, and 20,343 in
public administration. However, just over 50%—or about 372,000 of the total positions—are filled.
The Congress, which will be held from September 1 to 3, is part of the content programming of Reatech – International Fair of Technologies for Rehabilitation, Inclusion, and Accessibility, promoted by Fiera Milano Brasil, from September 1 to 4, at the São Paulo Expo. For Serra, accessibility and inclusion are extremely important topics that need to be further discussed in society. “It is essential that companies understand the challenges faced daily by people with disabilities, whose inclusion must be a political, educational, and corporate priority in Brazil.”.
For this very reason, Accessibility and Social Inclusion of people with disabilities in companies were the anchor themes chosen for the Reatech Congress. Maurício Macedo, CEO of Fiera Milano Brasil, highlights that “it will be a meeting with a corporate focus that will show how companies have worked to promote the inclusion and accessibility of these people. How leaders act in management and interact with them, ensuring that inclusion is not just an obligation, a necessity of
meet a quota, but in an effective way. It is an event that talks about hiring, development, and training of people in practice.
Talent retention
To debate these issues, the Reatech Congress on Inclusion and Accessibility in the Labor Market will feature renowned experts in Brazil and abroad, such as the prosecutor and national coordinator for the Promotion of Equal Opportunities and the Elimination of Discrimination in Employment at the Ministry of Public Labor (MPT) Adriana Reis de Araújo, Larissa Lopes, global head of Diversity and Inclusion at the BRF group, Carolina Gomes, executive director of People and Management at the Oswaldo Cruz German Hospital, Daniele Botaro, Head of Diversity and Inclusion LATAM at Oracle – among many others.
other leaders in the industry.
“These are people whose jobs are connected to inclusion and accessibility. They understand that it is useless to invest if, within a few months, the person leaves the company because they do not feel included,” explains Serra. “Companies need to take action to retain talent among people with disabilities. The debates will show that this concern exists in the private sector, but it needs to be expanded.”.
Among other panels that will be presented during the congress are: “The Role of Organizations and Society in Breaking Paradigms Related to the Inclusion of People with Disabilities,” “Leader Training to Interact, Involve, Empower, and Engage People with Disabilities or in Rehabilitation,” and “How Leaders Foster the Promotion of a Culture That Favors Integration, Empathy, and Diversity.”.
