Animals play a very important role in the therapy and recovery of many people. Interaction with them helps reduce stress, improves socialization and self-esteem. During Reatech, which runs until Sunday (Sep 4) at São Paulo Expo, GATI (Integrated Therapeutic Approach Group) set up a little farm and brought dogs, rabbits, a turtle, and even a pair of Madagascar cockroaches to demonstrate how they can help.
“The animal is used as an aid in human treatment with the objective of promoting motor, cognitive, social, and emotional improvement. Anyone, with or without a disability, can do and benefit from pet therapy. We work mainly with autistic children, children with Down syndrome, and those with special needs, said psychologist Ana Paula Souza, director of the Zoofoz facility.
Those who attend Reatech will have the opportunity to interact and play with these animals at the Little Farm and learn a little more about the work done by GATI. In addition to those already mentioned, Zoofoz has also been using frogs and achieving great success.
“We bring the same animals, but we are always including others. The frog was a big surprise for us. People love to touch it, because it is wet and cold, causing a different kind of stimulus. The cockroaches also caught our attention. Since they have claws that grip onto our skin so they don't fall off, they caused a sense of unease at first, but afterwards they loved it,” added Ana Paula.
Eduardo Foz, director of the Zoofoz Foundation, also praised the use of the twister, a domesticated rat, in the treatment. “The affectionate way they act with children is surprising; they arrive already kissing and showing all their affection,” he concluded.
