With the advancement of knowledge in the health sector, several alternative methods have been created to treat physical and psychological problems. One of the best known is equine-assisted therapy, a treatment in which horses are used in the patient's healing or improvement process. Professionals who specialize in this practice are participating in the 17th edition of Reatech, which runs until Sunday (4) at São Paulo Expo.
“We brought three horses to carry out activities every day during the event, which is a first in Latin America. These animals provide an experience for approximately 500 people a day, with the goal of having them perceive the three-dimensional movement and hip oscillation that the horse provides, says Liana Pires Santos, educational psychologist and director of Clínica GATI – Grupo de Abordagem Terapêutica Integrada.
All horses at the fair are trotters, gelded, and over six years of age. In addition, the equines undergo specific training to be able to assist patients during hippotherapy procedures.
Santos gave some very important warnings. “To be able to participate in therapy, it is necessary to be over two years of age, due to skeletal maturity. In cases of patients with Down syndrome, it is over three years. It is also crucial to have a medical certificate referral to carry out the treatment.”.
Another point mentioned by the specialist is the ideal time to achieve a good recovery result in patients' posture and balance, which is about six months to a year.
“I’ve been participating since the first edition of the fair, and without a doubt, it has contributed not only to our cause, but also to all the treatments and technologies that help people with disabilities. Reatech is an example and a reference throughout the country,” adds Santos.
