Beyond borders: young player from Santo André represents Brazil in global wheelchair basketball competition

Sérgio Veiga, 19 years old, is preparing for the Wheelchair Basketball World Championship in Dubai.

Competing on the international stage is a dream that is about to come true for Sérgio Veiga, from Santo André. At birth, the young man was diagnosed with myelomeningocele, a spinal cord deficiency, and at age 8, he found himself in the world of paralytic basketball.

The athlete's first contact with the sport was at a sports arena booth during Reatech, Latin America's renowned accessibility fair. At first, Veiga began his career at the Sports Association for the Disabled in São Paulo, and since then he has focused on his career, even winning the title of Brazilian champion.

Today, the athlete is part of the Brazilian National Team and the team secured a spot for the World Championship to be held in Dubai, starting on June 11. “I worked hard to achieve this goal. I make a living from sports,” Sérgio emphasizes.

The team's preparation is in full swing for the moment. First, the squad is training in Rio de Janeiro and, afterward, they traveled to the United Arab Emirates. DGABC TV spoke with the athlete at Parque Central to learn a little more about his routine, achievements, and awards. Check out the Reels on our social media.
