Congonhas and Santos Dumont airports get multisensory rooms for autistic individuals

The airports of Congonhas and Santos Dumont (RJ) have gained multisensory rooms for neurodivergent children. The spaces, inaugurated this Monday (19), were set up in the boarding areas with the goal of generating greater comfort for autistic children.

The spaces feature special lighting, activity panels, bubble columns, acoustic ceiling cladding, and custom-designed furniture.

According to the Minister of Ports and Airports, Marcio França, a third lounge is set to open soon in Vitória (ES). “Many airports have been concessioned. The model can be copied by these airports.”

Therapists and representatives of organizations will be available to the children. The spaces are expected to start welcoming the public within 10 days.

On the autism spectrum

autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition defined by difficulties in communication and social interaction and the presence of repetitive or restricted behaviors or interests.

Although the symptoms form the core of the disorder, the severity and presentation in each individual are variable, according to the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP).

The disorder is permanent, with no possibility of a cure, but early diagnosis and intervention help change the prognosis, soften the symptoms, and enhance the quality of life.

The cause of autism spectrum disorder remains unknown. Scientific evidence points to the origin being related to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
