O Brazil Magazine talks about the care for older adults with intellectual disabilities during the pandemic. The show talks to Leila Castro, an aging and longevity specialist at the Center for Education, Research, and Innovation (CEPI) of the Jô Clemente Institute (formerly Apae of São Paulo).
According to Leila, during this pandemic, the family unit of people with intellectual disabilities is facing a major challenge.
Because some people with intellectual disabilities have limitations in comprehension, there is difficulty in understanding preventive actions, such as wearing a mask, hygiene care, and/or social distancing.
To help, the Institute carries out work through telecare with families and caregivers to try to alleviate the fear of losing loved ones, in addition to making the isolation of these people more flexible.
