Activities for people with reduced mobility and elderly individuals with mobility difficulties
From November 2023 until last Friday (Jan 26), the assisted bathing service of the Accessible Beach project was used by 137 people with disabilities (PwD), people with reduced mobility, and the elderly with mobility difficulties.
Promoted by Faders – Inclusion and Accessibility, a foundation linked to the Secretariat of Social Development (Sedes), the project aims to include people with disabilities and reduced mobility so that they can enjoy the summer season safely. To this end, amphibious wheelchairs are used to provide the experience of swimming at 20 lifeguard posts across 17 municipalities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, spanning the North and South coasts as well as inland waters.
For the president of Faders, Marquinho Lang, the main objective of the project is to welcome people in the best possible way. “These are people with reduced mobility who need safety to enter the waters, seas, rivers, lakes, and pools, in the places where their families are enjoying their vacations and leisure time. Therefore, it is important that everyone can be included and enjoy that moment,” he pointed out.
The assisted bath is developed in partnership with the Military Fire Department. “The choice of lifeguard towers included locations that have reserved parking for people with disabilities, safe access to the tower, and an adapted restroom, to make it as easy as possible for people,” Lang reinforced.
