The sport that has given Brazil the most medals in the history of the Paralympic Games, track and field in Paris 2024 began to be contested this Friday, the 30th, already with great results. Early in the morning (Brasília time), the native of São Paulo Julius Caesar Agrippa, 33 won the sport's first gold medal of this edition of the mega-event.
Brazil had a double podium finish in the 5,000m event in the T11 class (visual impairments), with the native of Mato Grosso do Sul Yeltsin Jacques, 32, winning the bronze medal. Júlio completed the race in 14min48s85, a new world and Paralympic record for the distance. The silver went to the Japanese athlete Kenya Karasawa.
For the afternoon (Brasília time), there are more Brazilians in finals with good chances of medals. There will be five medal events in athletics alone. At 2:20 PM will be the final of the 100m T37 class (ambulatory athletes with cerebral palsy) with three athletes from the country: the one from Rio de Janeiro Ricardo Mendonça, who set the best time in the qualifying heats, the native of Acre Edson Pinheiro, the second fastest in the morning, and the paulista Christian Gabriel.
One of the main athletes of the Brazilian delegation in these Paralympic Games, the sprinter from Paraíba Petrúcio Ferreira will be in the 100m final of the T47 class (upper limb deficiency), starting at 2:29 PM (Brasília time). He finished second in his heat, with the seventh fastest overall time, and ran with a protective wrap on his right thigh. Two other Brazilians are in the final of this event: the native of Rio de Janeiro Washington Junior and Lucas Sousa from São Paulo.
“I am already enlightened by everything I’ve been through. I am here (at the Paralympic Games) for the third time, it is very gratifying. It was just the qualifier, the important thing is the final, that's where I can't sleep on the job. There were two false starts in my heat, which also cools things down a bit,” said Petrúcio, who has two Paralympic gold medals in the 100m from the Tokyo 2020 and Rio 2016 Games.
Starting at 1 PM (Brasília time), the female resident of São Paulo Giovanna Boscolo and the person from Amapá Wanna Brito compete in the club throw F32 final (cerebral palsied wheelchair users). Wanna won gold in this event at the Kobe 2024 World Championships and enters as one of the favorites for a medal.
There will still be Brazilians in the direct finals of the F55 shot put (competing in wheelchairs, sequelae of polio, spinal cord injuries, amputations), with Wallace Santos, and shot put in the F37 class (cerebral palsy for ambulatory athletes), with Fluminense Emanoel Oliveira.
A person from Rio Grande do Norte Thalita Simplício competes again this Friday, at 2:38 PM (Brasília time), in the women's 400m semifinal in the T11 class.
Track and field had its first day of competition in Paris this Friday and is sport that has given Brazil the most medals in the history of the Paralympic Games. The achievements of Júlio and Yeltsin brought the number to 172, now totaling 49 gold, 70 silver, and 53 bronze in track and field events.
Finals in swimming
After the three medals on the first day of competition in Paris, Brazilian swimming returned to the La Défense Arena on the morning of this Friday, August 30. The delegation will be represented in two finals.
Women's 4x50m freestyle relay – 20 points, scheduled for 3:44 PM this Friday. In the preliminaries, the Brazilian team was formed by Patrícia Santos, Lídia Cruz, Daniel Xavier Mendes, and Samuel Oliveira. They completed the race in 2:23:12 – the second best time overall, behind the USA.
Talisson Glock, from Santa Catarina, competes in the final of the 200m individual medley in the SM6 class (physical-motor limitation), starting at 12:58 PM this Friday. He finished his heat in the lead and was initially disqualified by the judges. The Brazilian delegation filed an appeal, which was initially denied, but accepted after a subsequent appeal.
Brazil's first female swimmers to take to the water this morning were Patrícia Santos and Esthefany Rodrigues, in the heats of the 100m freestyle S5 class (physical-motor disability). Esthefany Rodrigues, from São Paulo, finished the race in 1:34.10, while Patrícia Santos, from Minas Gerais, finished her heat with a time of 1:35.14, in 12th and 13th places respectively. Consequently, they missed out on the medal contention.
In the S9 class 100m breaststroke event (physical-motor limitation), the two Brazilians clocked the exact same time: 1 min 11 s 20. Ruan Souza and Lucas Mozela, both from São Paulo, finished in ninth place and, consequently, out of the final.
Goalball
The second round of the tournament goalball The competition began on Friday morning, the 30th, with a victory for Brazil’s men’s team and a loss for the women’s team. The men’s team, the defending champions, repeated their performance from their opening match and won again: 13–8 against the U.S., maintaining their perfect 100% record in the competition. The women’s team, however, which tied with the reigning two-time champions from Turkey in the first round, this time lost to Israel, 8–4.
This Saturday, Brazil plays its final matches of the group stage, which will end on Sunday, when the quarterfinal matchups will be determined for Monday (2). The women's national team takes the court first, starting at 9:45 AM (Brasília time), to face China. Afterward, at 12:30 PM, it will be the men's team's turn to face Iran.
The goalball tournament in Paris is contested by eight countries divided into two groups of four in both the women's and men's categories. Everyone qualifies for the knockout stage, where the order of the matchups will be: the first-place team from one side faces the fourth-place team from the other group, and the second-place team plays the third.
“We had the experiences from the last Paralympics, they are a team that knows how to play this kind of competition. And here it was no different. If you look at the results of the last competitions, the scores were wider margins. They found good balls in the first half, we had trouble finding the timing of the ball, but we made adjustments and, in the second half, we managed to impose our game. And it was good to break this taboo!”, analyzed the 25-year-old wing/pivot Emerson from Paraíba, referring to the fact that Brazil had beaten the North Americans for the first time in Paralympic Games – there had been three defeats until then.
The Brazilian goals were scored by Leomon Moreno (five), Emerson and André Dantas (three each), Parazinho (one) and Paulinho (one).
Bronze no table tennis
The Brazilian duo formed by Cátia Oliveira and Joyce Oliveira, both from São Paulo, was defeated this Friday, the 30th, by the South Korean duo formed by Su Yeon Seo and Jiyu Yoon by 3 sets to 0 (partials of 06/11, 09/11 and 11/13) in the WD5 women's doubles semifinals.
With this, the Brazilian women secured another bronze for Brazil at Paris 2024, since there are no third-place playoffs in table tennis. This is Cátia Oliveira's second Paralympic medal (she won bronze in the singles classes 1-2 event at Tokyo 2020) and Joyce Oliveira's first.
This is also Brazil's ninth medal in table tennis at the Paralympic Games. The sport had previously won the country three silvers and five bronzes in the history of the competition up to that point.
The Brazilian duo formed by Danielle Rauen, from Santa Catarina, and Luiz Manara, from São Paulo, was eliminated this Friday, the 30th, by the Polish duo (featuring Karolina Pek and Piotr Grudzien) by 3 sets to 2 (partials of 11/08, 11/08, 11/13, 04/11, and 09/11) in the quarterfinals of the XD17 mixed doubles.
The Brazilian duo managed to take a 2-0 lead in sets, but ended up being turned around in the final sets. The semifinals take place this Saturday, the 31st.
The Brazilian duo formed by Bruna Alexandre, from Santa Catarina, and Paulo Salmin, from São Paulo, was eliminated this Friday, the 30th, by the Ukrainian duo of Viktor Didukh and Iryna Shinkarova 3 sets to 0 (partials of 07/11, 04/11 and 09/11) in the quarterfinals of the XD17 mixed doubles.
Both Brazilians return to the court later this Friday. Bruna Alexandre plays in the quarterfinals of the women's doubles WD20, alongside Dani Rauen, from Santa Catarina. They will once again face a Ukrainian pair, formed by Iryna Shinkarova and Maryna Lytovchenko. The match will be at 9:00 AM (Brasília time) and 2:00 PM (Paris time).
Meanwhile, Paulo Salmim, alongside São Paulo native Israel Stroh, plays in the MD14 men's doubles against the British pair Billy Shilton and Paul Karabardak. The match takes place at 1:00 PM (Brasília time) and 6:00 PM (Paris time).
Taekwondo
Silvana Fernandes, from Paraíba, was trailing the Nepalese Palesha Goverdhan 5 to 1 at the Grand Palais in her debut at the Paris Paralympic Games. With 56 seconds left in the match, the scoreboard showed 8 to 3 for her rival. Silvana tied the match with 18 seconds remaining and turned it around to 10 to 8 with 7 seconds left on the clock.
The semifinal of the up to 57kg category is scheduled for 1:37 PM (Brasília time) / 6:37 PM (Paris time). The opponent has not yet been determined. Silvana won bronze at the Tokyo Games, the debut edition of taekwondo in the mega-event's program.
Nathan Torquato, from São Paulo, also fought this Friday in another quarterfinal match, but in the men's up to 63kg category. The gold medalist in the Tokyo edition, the Brazilian defeated Iranian Saeid Sadeghianpour 22 to 10.
