Educational games and video magnifiers are highlighted at the Laramara booth

The Laramara (Association for Assistance to the Visually Impaired) booth is a mandatory stop at Reatech. At this edition of the fair, which runs until Saturday at São Paulo Expo, the association is presenting various options in educational products as well as different video magnifier devices or electronic loupes. “The video magnifier is a system that allows users to enlarge the image of materials and price tags on products up to 100 times, with projection onto conventional screens or cell phone and tablet screens,” explains Robert Mortimer, coordinator at Laramara.

According to Mortimer, the image quality of these devices does not suffer from optical distortions, and it is also possible to change the colors between the background and the letter shapes to alternate contrasts that suit each individual.

Present at various editions of Reatech, Laramara recognizes the importance of the event due to its diverse audience. Therefore, the association always brings new items from its line of adapted games made in Brazil, including chess, checkers, and dominoes, which are exclusively represented by Laramara in the State of São Paulo.

Company offers assisted mobility system for wheelchair users

Accessibility, treatment, and freedom for people with disabilities. This is the main proposition of Lift Aid, a company specialized in elevation and care systems, which brought its products to Reatech 2023 with the primary goal of providing a higher quality of life for wheelchair users.

The company has developed transfer lifting systems for wheelchair users, similar to a hoist, in which the person is placed in a sort of basket, with complete safety, and transported from the wheelchair to the bed and vice versa. The system also allows the person to move around inside the house by means of tracks that form circuits defined by the user themselves.

“We have the bed-to-wheelchair transfer system and also the module used for gait training and body weight suspension, which is widely used in physical therapy and the rehabilitation of patients who are confined to their homes. It is a technology that responds to voice commands and can be installed throughout the entire house, so a person with mobility issues can move around easily, in addition to doing medical exercises safely, explains Ana Paula Navarro, CEO of Lift Aid.

The company designs the installation of the device, made of a lightweight material, according to the property's characteristics. The system features straight and curved sections, customizing the path according to the patient's needs. The tracks, which trace the circuit this person will follow through the house, are installed on the walls. “We also customize accessories, such as the vest and the basket, all according to each person's need, observing height and weight,” Navarro concluded.

Tortoise is the favorite choice when applying Animal-Assisted Therapy in children with ASD

Dogs, cockatiels, hamsters, rabbits, and tortoises are just a few of the animals that have helped change the lives of many patients in therapy offices, especially those with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).

Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) has become a resource for psychologists, incorporating human-animal interaction into a formal therapeutic process guided by professionals with specific objectives based on practical and theoretical activities. The PET Course featured a lecture titled “ASD and the Psychologist’s Role in AAT,” presented by Reatech, with the participation of psychologist Aline Prier de Saone and the Gati Team—Gati Equine Therapy.

Aline explains that the biggest challenge for professionals when applying AAT is people's lack of connection with animals. “People are very used to objects and, as a result, end up objectifying animals. It is necessary to establish a bond with this animal and not just use it at the time of the session. And also to know the species, its habits and behaviors, because that is what brings safety to the care,” explains Prier.

In the case of animal-assisted therapy for autism, the psychologist explains that children with this condition tend to identify strongly with the yellow-footed tortoise, since it exhibits characteristics such as retreating into its shell during moments of stress.

“Children with ASD experience a tremendous gain in independence and self-esteem. Contact with animals fosters an increase in autonomy and independence, motivating the patient to step out of their comfort zone and do something that was previously difficult. In these cases, I always start therapy with the red-footed tortoise,” she concludes.

Down futsal, basketball, and wheelchair rugby are among the activities at the ADD Arena

An arena was set up by ADD (Sports Association for the Disabled) at this year's Reatech 2023 to host institutions interested in promoting sports modalities for people with disabilities. The space hosted the Down syndrome futsal, wheelchair basketball and rugby, Paralympic volleyball, table tennis, martial arts, Paralympic boccia, and track and field teams.

ADD is an entity that has been in the market for 27 years. Without educational purposes, the institution has the mission of providing social inclusion for people with disabilities through sports.

“Currently, we serve 260 school-age children and adolescents in our adapted sports initiation program. Adults are integrated into high-performance programs to represent Brazil in international competitions, Paralympics, and world championships in sports such as basketball, volleyball, paralympic boccia, and table tennis, explains Sileno Santos, general director of ADD.

The director points out that, currently, there is a high demand for sports by people with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and other intellectual disabilities. “We are also developing specific programs, since this is an audience with very distinct characteristics. So we serve people with physical, visual, and intellectual disabilities. And today the largest number of people are those with Down Syndrome and ASD,” he concludes.

Success of corporate diversity policies depends on the participation of all leadership, experts evaluate at Reatech Congress

The debate on how to harmonize diversity policies capable of offering due respect to people with disabilities was the theme of yet another panel held by the Reatech Congress, which ended this Friday (Oct. 6) at the São Paulo Expo.

Mediated by Marcelo Pires, CEO of Consolidar, the meeting brought together experts and professionals who, in recent years, have worked to expand inclusion policies in the labor market.

Rafael Camargo de Souza, HR manager at Dry Lock, a company that has been successful in its efforts to become more inclusive, points out that inclusion projects need to start with leadership, since changes of this kind can generate different types of conflicts at the beginning. “Conflicts are always resolved by leadership. That's why we started with these individuals. We brought everyone together to talk openly about everything, about fears and doubts. Many people didn't even know what diversity and inclusion were,” Souza recalls.

According to Marcelo Gregório, HR and Planning Director at Aqia Química Inovativa, managers need to have the humility to learn about people with disabilities. “Often, these people are ignored by companies because we don't know their daily lives,” he states, adding a tip for those who want to start creating a culture of inclusion. ”Start with the diversity you already have within the company.”.

The Coordinator of Transportation and Mobility for the Secretariat for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Marco Pellegrini, points out that inclusion programs must bring dignity. “What people with disabilities expect from companies is to be treated with dignity. Inclusion is not just putting these people in entry-level positions or on the factory floor, but in all positions.”.

Top management also needs to be committed for inclusion and diversity initiatives to succeed and transform the company culture for the better. This is the view of Alex Ornelas, Vice President of Operations at Dry Lock. “Upper management has to be involved. We know that every leadership team has many priorities to manage, but if diversity is not among those priorities, it’s not going to work,” he warns.
