With an on-screen and physical keyboard, speech synthesizer, and enlarged fonts, the equipment is certified by the National Organization of the Blind of Brazil; the main rehabilitation, inclusion, and accessibility technology trade fair will take place in September
São Paulo, August 2022 – Being forced to reveal a credit card PIN to a friend or even a store clerk when making a purchase is a common situation for visually impaired people. A new step to end this embarrassment will be officially announced in September: the world's first credit and debit card machine that is fully accessible to visually impaired people.
The presentation of the new technology to the public will be made by the ONCB (National Organization of the Blind of Brazil) during the 17th Reatech – International Fair of Technologies for Rehabilitation, Inclusion and Accessibility, which will take place from September 1 to 4 at the São Paulo Expo, in São Paulo.
Beto Pereira, president of ONCB, states that the card machine, which will benefit blind and low-vision people, features both a touchscreen and physical keypad, a synthesizer that verbalizes all information, and enlarged fonts, among other technologies to ensure total accessibility during payment. The equipment, manufactured by Perto S.A., was the first product to receive Soina, an accessibility seal created in 2022 by ONCB that evaluates and certifies products and services accessible to people with disabilities.
“The card machine is ready. Now, we are moving on to a new phase, which is convincing card operators of the need to put this technology on the market,” Pereira explains. “This also involves raising awareness in society at large and mobilizing blind or low-vision people to demand this right when making purchases.”
Journalistic coverage
The National Organization of the Blind of Brazil will also provide radio and TV coverage with blind and low-vision communicators during Reatech 2022. The organization will be at São Paulo Expo with a team of 15 blind and low-vision professionals, including journalists, radio broadcasters, advertising professionals, and audio and video technicians.
Reatech will be broadcast in full and live on Rádio ONCB (www.oncb.org.br/radio). The organization's team will also host live streams with interviews and discussion panels on YouTube, which will be shown on the ONCB na Rede channel.
The booth of the National Organization of the Blind of Brazil will also feature a space for the employability of people with disabilities. The topic will be highlighted with the participation of the Ágora program, focused on professional inclusion. The program includes an online platform that brings together visually impaired people, organizations, and companies, and offers services such as career guidance, training, and support for entrepreneurship.
Agora was created by FOAL (ONCE Foundation for Solidarity with Blind People in Latin America) and brought to Brazil by ONCB, in partnership with the Brazilian Paralympic Committee and the Brazilian Confederation of Sports for the Visually Impaired.
