The sports arena on the Reatech court has already established itself as a tradition of the event. Over the four days of the fair, the space aims to provide activities that promote interaction between the public and Paralympic athletes. For the opening of the parasports games, ADD (Associação Desportiva para Deficientes) held a parade with groups of children who participate in activities developed at the association's centers spread across the city of São Paulo.
During the parade, the groups participated in challenges, followed by ADD Challenges, a competition involving external teams where people with and without disabilities were able to interact and participate in sports activities, with the aim of bringing the public closer and promoting paralympic sports. The schedule of the Reatech multi-sport court also featured competitions in athletics, boccia, wheelchair basketball (in 5x5 and 3x3 formats), soccer, and sitting volleyball.
“We are truly very happy and grateful for the opportunity to be here once again, showcasing the sporting potential of children and youth with disabilities. This interaction is very important because it allows us to bring together, in a single space, people with and without disabilities, as well as with different types of disabilities. When people have the opportunity to live together in a group with this diversity, everyone is able to better understand each other's limitations and capabilities, states Sileno Santos, sports director at ADD.
Valdelene de Sousa, mother of Artur (14), a young man with Down syndrome who participates in sports activities at one of the association's centers, highlights: “In addition to physical activity, socializing with friends during the activities helped his behavioral development a lot, which is wonderful. At the fair, we also had the chance to learn about job opportunities in projects, such as the apprenticeship program, which we didn't know about before.”.
Talita Bárbara, an atypical mother of Eduardo (15), shares her experience: “The challenges faced by atypical mothers are still very much tied to the issue of accessibility, which, despite being widely discussed, is still quite limited. Sport, however, was very positive for both me and him, as it gave us a new worldview. In addition to meeting several inspiring stories, sport strengthens us to continue this journey. Eduardo has made many friends, and through this, families grow closer and help one another. Sport has this power to create these bonds.”.
For Eliane Miada, director and founder of ADD, sports practice is essential for all children, with or without disabilities: “These regular activities bring physical and motor independence to young people. Our goal is to help them develop autonomy for daily life, without an exclusive focus on high performance. Of course, some may stand out, but what we seek with this project is to promote independence and autonomy so that they can lead a normal everyday life, respecting their limitations.”.
Sabrina Custódia, a paracycling athlete and participant in this year's Paris Paralympics, was also at the event and shared her journey: “Sport came into my life after my accident and was essential for my rehabilitation. It was here, at Reatech, that I discovered adaptive sport and ADD, and it was this experience that made me fall in love with paracycling. If I hadn't come to Reatech back then, I don't know where I would be today. I believe it is very important for people, with or without disabilities, to come and see for themselves and get motivated to practice sports, becoming an inspiration to others. Reatech is essential for us; besides transforming lives, it offers a space for new athletes, which is wonderful.”.
