Fair will be held in June 2019 in São Paulo, debating the progresses and barriers of the sector, which moves approximately BRL 20 billion/year in the country

São Paulo, January 2019– The orthosis, prosthesis and special materials (OPME) sector is increasingly growing in Brazil, thanks to the technological evolution and a greater concern by the people with their own health. According to information from IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), this industry sector moves about BRL 20 billion every year.

Based on this scenario, the 16th Reatech – International Fair of Rehabilitation, Inclusion and Accessibility Technologies will present the new products in the sector and will boost the search for solutions to the market. The main event in Latin America will be held between June 13 and 16, 2019, at São Paulo Expo Exhibition & Convention Center,in São Paulo’s capital city.

Organized and promoted by Cipa Fiera Milano, Reatech has been investing for more than 20 years in the evolution and development of the sector in Brazil.  At every edition, it gathers about 300 exhibitors from the following sectors: employment agencies oriented to people with disabilities and reduced mobility, financial institutions, wheelchair manufacturers, human resources departments, pharmaceutical industries, trained animals service, adapted vehicles for people with disabilities (cars, buses, vans), hearing system manufacturers, special equipment, hospital materials, personal care, prostheses and orthoses, alternative therapies, tourism and leisure.

Some companies will exhibit new products at Reatech 2019. Refresh Brazil will bring the Flex Amphibious Wheelchair “Mareia” – Beach & Trail: the only amphibious wheelchair with quality certificate from “I.M.R.E.A”, according to Armando Fantini, the company’s president. “We will also launch the Universal Inclusive Game ‘Expert Brazil’ designed for any environment, for all ages and pathologies. It can be used individually or in a group, which will be available for use in the sports and leisure area of the event. And we will also present the Bamboo Way Ecological Footbridge, “explains Fantini.

Metalúrgica Buzin will bring the collapsible toilet seat. “This chair was made with the purpose of adding easiness to the life of the disabled person in simple cases, such as showering or just going to the bathroom. And, thinking of giving more autonomy to the PWDS, the chair is totally collapsible, to make it easier in cases of travel and environment changes, “says Danilo Souza Ribeiro, Buzin’s R&D (Research and Development) supervisor.

The news also come from abroad in the sector. Recently, the Santa Casa Hospital in Porto Alegre became the first in Latin America to provide its patients with the help of a robotic rehabilitation device to go back to walking. Available for use by the Unified Health System (SUS), the “Erigo” equipment helps people who have neurological problems or have suffered a stroke, for example, to recover faster.

The OPME consumption

In recent years, according to the Brazilian government, the demand for OPME has generated the appearance of more competition in the sector. Today there are around 3,600 companies operating in Brazil between manufacturers, importers and distributors – most of them are small companies.

The growth rate of these products and services between 1999 and 2008, according to GTT Healthcare, a company specializing in self-identification technologies for the health sector, was 44%, a percentage that is even higher if only implants are considered between 1999 and 2014, which grew 249%, showing a behavior that is repeated in other health sectors such as dentistry, which also showed an expressive growth of 184%. While in the United States, the world’s leading industry market, about 8,000 new products (OPME) are registered each year, the Brazilian average is 14,000 new products per year.
