The presidential candidate, Senator Simone Tebet (PMDB-MS), and the vice-presidential candidate, Senator Mara Gabrilli (PSDB-SP), visited the 17th Reatech – International Fair for Rehabilitation, Inclusion, and Accessibility Technologies, this Saturday afternoon (Sept 3). Before an audience made up of people with disabilities, Tebet recalled that her government includes “the largest inclusion program in our history.” “It is one of the four pillars of our program and will be overseen by our running mate, Mara Gabrilli,” she guaranteed.
The candidate criticized the lack of conditions for the Unified Health System (SUS) to implement its care program for people with disabilities. “SUS already has this program, but it is precarious because resources are lacking, and thus there is no progress.” She also recalled that regulatory agencies often take a long time to analyze and evaluate whether certain services, activities, medications, and equipment can be funded by SUS.
“We are going to speed things up and put it into practice. And in the specific case of this fair, we are talking about rehabilitation, technology, science, and innovation that are right there, in the palm of your hand, ready to reach people with disabilities, yet they do not. They do not reach them because of bureaucracy and ill will. Money is directed to where it is not needed, and regulatory agencies, at the behest of the federal government, put the brakes on so that these services do not become public and do not reach the Unified Health System.
Mara Gabrilli reinforced Tebet’s position by noting that demand today far exceeds supply. “Brazil is considered the third-leading country in rehabilitation. But it cannot meet all the demand. When we talk about inclusion, we’re talking about every area of government—culture, sports, urban infrastructure, transportation, education, and early childhood. The latest census showed that 45 million Brazilians have some form of disability, and 90% live in poverty. People with disabilities are one of the most vulnerable groups in this country.”.
