During Reatech, the booth of Lararama – Brazilian Association for Assistance to the Visually Impaired It has received many visitors looking for games that help children, youth, and adults with visual impairments and other associated disabilities build their autonomy at all stages of life and feel included in society. Laramara was founded almost 31 years ago, on September 7, 1991. Mara and Victor Siaulys were preparing for the birth of Lara, who was diagnosed with retinopathy of prematurity. Faced with a market that paid little attention to children with visual impairments, Mara gathered a group of professionals to create the institute.
Anna Maria Gomes, currently the coordinator, has been with the project since the beginning, when she was invited by her friend Mara. Alongside Eliane Teixeira, who works in the area of pedagogical resources, she is responsible for making the adapted toys. Despite the common use of the term ‘toy’, it is important to point out that these items are accessibility resources that cater to all ages.
Battleship, checkers, tic-tac-toe, and the memory game are some of the activities that have passed through the hands of Anna Maria and Eliane to become fully inclusive.
“In checkers, the pieces have different heights so that visually impaired people can tell them apart. Another important point is that they are attached to the board with Velcro so that no one accidentally knocks a piece over,” Eliane showed.
Anna Maria also presented other items made at Laramara. “Before these mentioned toys, we have black-and-white and high-contrast products so that babies can learn colors and identify shapes. There are many resources, such as a small toolbox, which in addition to having play pieces also features several lock options so that the child learns to work with the different types that already exist,” she commented.
