Children and adolescents have the right to play and have fun guaranteed by the ECA (Statute of the Child and Adolescent). However, youth with visual impairments still face challenges due to the lack of toys that meet their needs. Nevertheless, some institutions and companies are dedicated to developing solutions for this audience.
At the 19th Reatech + Expo Brasil Paralímpico, LARAMARA – Brazilian Association for Assistance of the Visually Impaired is presenting accessible toys for children with visual impairments, such as balls with bells and Rubik's cubes with tactile markings, under the motto that playing is learning.
“Children need to play and develop from a young age before having access to technological resources. We develop toys with auditory features, textures, and braille writing, all handmade. When a visually impaired child receives a toy like this, it is a true fulfillment, says Anna Maria Gomes, head of pedagogical resources at the institution.
Roberto Gallo, co-owner of Shopping do Braille, who was also present at the event, mentions that one of the main challenges is finding suppliers who have the necessary materials for the production and resale of toys and educational materials adapted for people with visual impairments. The company was born from Livre Acesso Braille, which publishes books in braille.
“We hear a lot about the shortage of materials, especially educational and pedagogical ones, because there are not many options. Our proposal is to develop a line of adapted products in accordance with what people with disabilities themselves tell us. We do not invent anything; we put into practice what people need,” points out Gallo.
In addition to items for people with visual impairments, such as braille playing cards, adapted checkers, and a tactile globe, the company produces and resells resources in Libras (Brazilian Sign Language), such as educational materials for teaching numbers and the alphabet.
