São Paulo, June 2019 – The interaction of psychiatric patients with animals resulted in a motivational improvement, according to a pioneering study conducted by Vera Cruz Hospital. The results of the project were presented yesterday (June 16) by educational psychologist Liana Pires Santos, in the Pet Therapy Course, during the Reatech - International Fair of Technologies for Rehabilitation, Inclusion and Accessibility.
In the lecture “Results of AAI Project Implementation in a Mental Health Institution (Psychiatric Hospital)”, Liana summarized the work, which ended in 2018 and followed psychiatric patients for one year.
Based on the patients' profiles, they received visits from four groups of animals: canines, for those with motor difficulties; rodents and lagomorphs (such as rabbits), for schizophrenics and autistics, among others; birds with curved beaks, for those who needed to stimulate language and work on attention; and even tortoises, for patients with learning disabilities, for example.
“We were able to measure psychiatric gains. The patients began to bond with the therapeutic method and look forward to the animals” weekly visits. We concluded that the therapy altered and improved motivational issues, stated Liana. The work was done in partnership with the Getulio Vargas Foundation, with the objective of mobilizing innovative therapies in the psychiatric field.
Medical indicators are essential for the rehabilitation of high-risk injuries
Ensuring the quality of life for a patient who has suffered an injury, including high-risk sport athletes, does not depend solely on eventual surgery. Having indicators and data at hand can help the physician make the best decisions, such as the right time to allow a return to physical activity—and even convince the patient to follow precautions so they do not get injured again.
This was one of the tips from Páblius Staduto Braga da Silva, a physician specializing in sports medicine, with a degree in rheumatology from Unifesp and internal medicine from PUC-SP, who gave the lecture “Successful treatments for the rehabilitation of high-risk sports athletes.” The presentation took place yesterday (June 16) at Reamed (Congress of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation), held during Reatech – International Fair of Technologies in Rehabilitation, Inclusion, and Accessibility.
The specialist addressed the definition of high-risk sports, shared cases from his practice, taught technical content regarding care, and, of course, presented various indicators regarding injuries. “The more information the doctor has, the better their daily work and the greater the guarantee of offering a better quality of life to the patient, showing where they ‘started’ from and where they ‘are now’,” he stated.
Integrative Equestrian Games provide more sensory interaction, creativity, and confidence for people with disabilities
How to improve the affective and emotional interaction of people with disabilities by relating learning processes through Equine-Assisted Therapy? These and other questions were answered by psychopedagogue Liana Pires Santos in the lecture “Integrative Equestrian Games,” which is part of the Equine-Assisted Therapy Workshop, held on Saturday (15), at 16th Reatech– International Fair of Technologies in Rehabilitation, Inclusion and Accessibility.
“Integrative equestrian games help in the biopsychosocial development of people with special needs. They provide better group dynamics and help with playful situations. Therefore, the purpose of the lecture was to show the many possibilities of working with the practice with more than one horse in the arena, and how these activities can be carried out with criteria and without risks, she stated.
Liana, who is also a representative of ANDE-BRASIL (National Association of Equine-Assisted Therapy) and director of GATI (Integrated Therapeutic Approach Group), believes it is important to bring equine-assisted therapy to a fair of this scale, as it is necessary to showcase and update the many potential situations in which equine-assisted therapy can be applied.
