Equitherapy and animal-assisted treatment subprograms broaden the reach of rehabilitation and inclusion
The relationship between humans and animals has proven to be one of the most effective and sensitive resources in physical and emotional rehabilitation. The touch, movement, and even the gaze of an animal can activate unique neurological and affective responses. And it is with this integrative perspective that the Reatech + Expo Brasil Paralímpico 2025, come in November 6 and 8, no São Paulo Expo, will bring together experts from all over the country to discuss the transformative power of animal-assisted therapies.
Organized by Fiera Milano Brasil in partnership with Brazilian Paralympic Committee, the fair is consolidating itself as a Latin American reference in accessibility and inclusion. Among its activities, two training courses are gaining attention for their technical and human potential: PET Course – Animal-Assisted Therapy, no November 7th and Equine-Assisted Therapy Workshop, no day 8.
Equine-assisted therapy: strength, technique, and emotion in motion
O Equine-Assisted Therapy Technical Improvement Workshop, promoted by ANDE-BRASIL National Association of Equotherapy, will bring together professionals who have been revolutionizing the use of the horse in therapeutic and sports processes. Experts will be present, such as Elisangela Souza, Colonel Renato Pereira Gomes, Eliane Baascht, Eros Spartalis e Liana Pires Santos, benchmark names in equine-assisted therapy and para-equestrian sport.
A educational psychologist Liana Pires Santos, representative of ANDE-BRASIL and director of GATI Equotherapy, explains that the event will bring important new features: “We are bringing modalities that have never been presented at Reatech, such as Vaulting and Endurance. These are practices that unite sport and rehabilitation and can inspire equotherapy centers across the country to innovate and diversify their services.”.
These modalities show the evolution of equine-assisted therapy in Brazil. Vaulting works on balance and body rhythm; endurance riding stimulates stamina and coordination; and barrel racing develops agility and focus. Adapted to the therapeutic context, they become powerful tools for the motor and emotional development of people with disabilities or in rehabilitation.
The workshop will also discuss challenges in para-equestrian sport, scientific advancements, and the importance of continuing education. There will also be practical experiences that bring participants closer to the realities and possibilities of application.
“Today we have about 500 equine-assisted therapy centers in Brazil, and more than 100 in São Paulo alone. Bringing these professionals together for updates and exchange is essential for the advancement of the field,” Liana points out.
PET Course: assisted therapies and the prominence of reptiltherapy
On the day November 7, o PET Course – Animal-Assisted Therapy it will address new frontiers of assisted therapy, broadening professionals' perspectives beyond the horse. Dogs, cats, and even reptiles will be at the center of discussions, showing how different species can contribute to human well-being.
The course will be led by Luciana Bellini, Cristina Sato e Renato Costa, specialists in animal-assisted therapy and animal behavior. One of the most anticipated topics is reptile therapy, an innovative approach that uses snakes and other reptiles as therapeutic mediators in controlled contexts, and which, although still little known in Brazil, has been gaining ground due to its emotional and psychological impact.
Contact with a reptile, usually associated with fear, becomes a therapeutic tool: by holding a snake in a safe and guided manner, the patient learns to deal with the unexpected and control their emotional responses. This symbolic confrontation strengthens self-confidence and reduces anxiety, with positive results already observed in patients with phobias and traumas.
In addition to reptile therapy, the course will cover the ethical management of co-therapist animals, safety protocols, zoonoses, and the evaluation of therapeutic outcomes. The proposal is to train professionals capable of combining science, empathy, and responsibility, recognizing the animal as an active part of the healing process.
Dialogue between science, empathy, and inclusion
The presence of assisted therapies at Reatech shows that inclusion and rehabilitation go beyond technology. They happen within connection and trust. By bringing together professionals from diverse fields, the event promotes a dialogue between science and sensitivity, technique and emotion.
Stop Maurício Macedo, CEO of Fiera Milano Brasil, this integration translates the purpose of the event: “We want every visitor to leave Reatech 2025 with a new perspective on the power of inclusion and therapies that unite science, sensitivity, and nature. When technology and affection go hand in hand, the result is true innovation.”
Each of the activities—the workshop, the PET course, and other actions—makes up a great mosaic of inclusion and learning. At a time when mental health and well-being are gaining global priority, animal-assisted therapies remind us that, often, the path to healing begins with something simple: reconnecting with nature and relearning the value of trust.
