A Netflix released, last week, the first national bilingual fiction production, in Portuguese and Libras (Brazilian Sign Language), about the experience of deaf culture in Santa Catarina. “In a universe where sound does not exist, deaf youth face the challenges of a society designed only for hearing people,” explains the synopsis of the series.
Chrysalis it addresses the social, cultural, and emotional dilemmas of deaf people in four episodes. Written by Alessandra da Rosa Pinho, a Letras-Libras student at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), the project was created in 2014, developed into a film, and won funding and awards.
In 2016, the project was transformed into a four-episode series, and the first season was licensed by TV Cultura. The episodes are standalone stories, changing the way deaf people are portrayed by the Brazilian public. The deaf community represents, according to the IBGE, about 10 million people in the country.
