We are very grateful to know that we are the inspiration for projects like this, I introduce you to “SAMANTHA”, an accessible shelf developed by João Fontenelle, owner of Design4Inclusion, a company focused on the development of assistive technology projects aimed at improving the quality of other people’s lives.

Samantha Shelf

In the words of João Heitzmann Fontenelle himself:
The Samantha Shelf is a concept project of how Design4inclusion intends to act in developing new furniture for people with different needs. Our proposal is to create products with attractive design and, at the same time, to provide greater autonomy to these people in the performance of their daily tasks, through the incorporation of mechanical devices.

In this project, we propose the use of the upper part of a dining table, ergonomically designed for a wheelchair user to have their meals together with two other people. The suspended shelf on the table has mirrored-glass doors, allowing you to view its contents only when the internal lights are on.

This is done by a switch on the front of the table, easily operable by the wheelchair user. Once you have found a product you want to use, you can make it accessible through a second switch, positioned next to the first one. This drives an engine that lowers all the shelves, descending until one notices that the product is already within reach, returning the switch to its stopping position.

The maximum limit of this descent is below table level, fitting into a gap left between the dining space and the wall. This gap is necessary to allow comfortable access until the last shelf. There is an option to close it by a sliding cover, positioned when the shelf is not moving. A variation of the wood shades was used to provide a greater contrast of its elements, a dark wood panel was inserted in the background and the cabinet closure was made in medium shades.

In addition, led lights have been inserted into each shelf and between the bottom panel, both to provide product visibility and to give a special touch to the set design. After all, as is natural of every human being, “we do not want only food, we want food, fun and art”.

After the great receptivity that this shelf obtained at Reatech 2017, we are already continuing this project and soon we will be able to offer an entire set of cabinets for an entire kitchen.
