ONCB presents at Reatech the world's first credit card machine fully accessible to the blind

The ordeal of being forced to reveal a credit card PIN to an acquaintance or, in the worst case, to a store clerk when making a purchase is a common scenario for people with visual impairments. To put an end to this embarrassment, the world's first credit and debit card machine that is fully accessible to the blind or people with low vision is being introduced exclusively at Reatech 2022.

The presentation of the new technology to the public takes place at the ONCB (National Organization of the Blind of Brazil) booth. “Although pretty, the new machines touch screen they do not offer autonomy for the visually impaired, especially for entering the password. Older ones, on the other hand, with a physical keyboard, do not have any type of accessibility. As a result, we often become dependent on people we don't know, being forced to believe that they are putting in the correct information,” states Milton Carvalho, thematic secretary of technology and access to information at ONCB.

The card machine carries several advantages, starting with its screen and physical keypad, a synthesizer that verbalizes all information and operations, enlarged fonts for people with low vision, and other technologies that guarantee total accessibility during payment for merchants and visually impaired customers.

Another interesting point is that this equipment was the first to receive Soina, an accessibility seal created this year by the ONCB, which evaluates and certifies accessible products and services for this public.

The use of this innovation involves raising awareness in society in general and mobilizing blind or low-vision people so that they demand this right when making purchases. “The equipment is ready, just waiting for card operators to buy and put this technology on the market,” concludes Carvalho.
