São Paulo, August 2022 – Nowadays, no one is surprised to learn that pets are considered part of the family. Nor is it uncommon to learn how pets help people adapt to various adverse scenarios, and in recovering from physical and mental conditions.
In this context, there is a growing number of healthcare professionals interested in learning more about and practicing Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), in which various types of pets act as co-therapists.
To present theoretical and practical aspects of this field, the Reatech – International Fair of Technologies in Rehabilitation, Inclusion and Accessibility Introducing the Pet Course, which takes place on September 2nd, from 1:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The fair runs from September 1st to 4th at the São Paulo Expo.
Liana Pires Santos, educational psychologist and director of the GATI Clinic – Integrated Therapeutic Approach Group, is one of the organizers of the course and presents a lecture covering the history, rationale, and therapeutic application of Animal-Assisted Therapy in the psychomotor field.
“The importance of animal-assisted therapy as a method is more than proven. Currently, we work with two aspects: equine-assisted therapy, performed with horses, and ‘pet therapy,’ which is assisted by animals such as dogs, cats, and other smaller ones. Today, we know that, in addition to therapeutic effects, this type of activity reinforces care for animals and nature – explains the speaker – the result is a major emotional gain.
Another point is the possibility of being outside the traditional environment, which is always tied to an office. “It is a type of work that places the patient in another setting, which, together with the animals, causes a large surge of serotonin. The work can take place in parks, nursing homes, and other open spaces beyond clinics and hospitals.” Serotonin, nicknamed the “happiness hormone,” helps regulate heart rate, sleep, appetite, and mood, among other things.
Santos explains that, in addition to horses and more traditional pets, rodents and birds from the Psittacidae family can also be used, such as cockatiels, lovebirds, parakeets, or parrots. “Each type of animal enriches the experience in a certain way. These ‘talking’ birds stimulate communication and verbal articulation, affection for small mammals reinforces the bond of affection, and horses give us a sense of security,” the therapist exemplifies. Among the course's focuses are working with the visually impaired and people on the autism spectrum. In the latter case, activities with canine companions have recorded significant results in specialized literature.
Other topics during the course include actual responsible pet ownership, the importance of monitoring, the role of the psychologist in AAT, work possibilities, among others.
